VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Registering to vote is the first step every citizen takes to become an eligible voter. You may register by completing a Voter Registration Form. These are available at the Canvassing Authority Office in City Hall, the Newport Public Library, the RI Registry of Motor Vehicles, and by clicking here. You may register at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must be registered at least 30 days in advance.

Registration Requirements:

  • You must be a citizen of the United States
  • You must be a legal resident of Rhode Island
  • You may pre-register at age 16 but you must be at least 18 years of age to vote on Election Day

If you move or change your name you are required to update your voter registration.

Rhode Island now accepts online voter registrations.  You may register to vote or update your voter registration online by using the Secretary of State's website: https://vote.sos.ri.gov.

If you have moved out of state or otherwise wish to cancel your voter registration, please submit an Affidavit for Cancellation and Removal to our office.

REMINDER TO VOTERS TO CHECK THEIR PARTY AFFILIATION AHEAD OF THE DISAFFILIATION DEADLINE ON JUNE 14.

Party Primaries will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2018.  If you are affiliated with a specific political party, you may only vote in that party's primary.  Unaffiliated voters can choose to vote in either party's primary.  Please note that by casting a vote in a party's primary, you automatically become affiliated with that party.  You may return to an unaffiliated status after casting your vote by requesting a "disaffiliation form".

If you are currently registered with a political party and wish to disaffiliate or change parties for the primary, you must do so by submitting an updated voter registration form by the Thursday, June 14, 2018 deadline at 4:00 P.M.  Voter registration forms are available at city hall, or can be downloaded by using the link in the first paragraph of this page.  You may also use the Secretary of State's online voter registration center to make changes or check your party.  https://vote.sos.ri.gov
