Registering to vote is the first step every citizen takes to become an eligible voter. You may register by completing a Voter Registration Form. These are available at the Canvassing Authority Office in City Hall, the Newport Public Library, the RI Registry of Motor Vehicles, and by clicking here. You may register at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must be registered at least 30 days in advance.
- You must be a citizen of the United States
- You must be a legal resident of Rhode Island
- You may pre-register at age 16 but you must be at least 18 years of age to vote on Election Day
If you move or change your name you are required to update your voter registration.
Rhode Island now accepts online voter registrations. You may register to vote or update your voter registration online by using the Secretary of State's website: https://vote.sos.ri.gov.
