The City of Newport provides, at no cost to its regular full time employees, a group term life insurance policy. Stated below are the policy amounts as of July 1, 2009:

A $50,000.00 Group Life Insurance Policy is issued to full time Police Officers effective the date of swearing in.

A $50,000.00 Group Life Insurance Policy is issued to full time AFSCME, NEARI and Managerial employees after the completion of two years employment.

A $100,000.00 Group Life Insurance Policy is issued to full time Firefighters effective the date of swearing in.

 

Municipal employees are required to become members of the Municipal Employees Retirement System of the State of Rhode Island.

Police Officers and Firefighters are required to become members of the City of Newports Retirement plan. Members contribute eight percent (8%) of their regular salary to this plan.

All regular full-time employees of the City of Newport shall accrue sick leave on a bi-weekly basis. Employees are eligible to use sick leave after the completion of thirty (30) days employment and with a minimum available balance of eight (8) hours.

All employees accrue a total of four (4) hours bi-weekly of sick leave hours throughout their duration of employment with the City of Newport.

Maximum allowable sick leave accumulations shall be as follows:

AFSCME, NEARI and Executive-level Employees

  • Unlimited hours if employed before 7/1/95
  • 960 hours if employed on or after 7/1/95

Police and Fire Uniform Employees

  • Unlimited hours
 

In efforts to encourage continued self-development, leadership, training and education for potential advancement in the City service, the City of Newport offers a tuition reimbursement program for college courses that are job-related.

Eligible employees are those who have been employed by the City of Newport for no less than six (6) months and have completed their probationary period.

 

Eligible City employees may enjoy the convenience of paying for eligible health care and dependent care expenses with pre-tax dollars. For even greater flexibility and convenience, the City offers employee participants with a Debit card to use for eligible expenses.

The City values each employee in its "City family". As such, the City offers every City employee with an Employee Assistance Program at no cost.

Understanding that Life is complicated and challenges can and do occur at home and work may result in situations that are difficult to cope without professional and "confidential" assistance.

The Rhode Island Employee Assistance Services (RIEAS) is the City's choice provider in bringing free, confidential counseling and referral services for a wide variety of personal and professional problems.

Household members and dependents are also covered under the City's program.
