City of Newport Department of Planning and Development
The Comprehensive Land Use Plan

The City of Newport and the Planning Board are in process of updating the Newport Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

As only minor alterations had been made to the document since initial adoption in 1992, the Planning Department and Planning Board are significantly updating the document.

The current revamp of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan began in 2008 and involves fresh goals, relevant policies, focused narrative, realistic implementation strategies, current maps and reformatting.

A working group and subcommittee of the Planning Board meets regularly to revise each of the eight (8) elements and to create a Vision for the document. Each month, new material is presented to the Planning Board for review and comment.

A consulting team is assisting the in-house effort assuring the end product is clear, concise, and easily-readable. The goal is achieving a product that is a user-friendly document (both hard copy and electronically available) emphasizing community priorities, actions and outcomes to guide Newport’s future land use decisions and direction.
