The U.S. Department of Justice provides funding for grants to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence. These funds are made available to local law enforcement agencies through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant (JAG) Formula Program: Local Solicitation. The Newport Police Department has participated in the Direct JAG Program in the past, and has been allocated $ 17,727 in the 2018 solicitation.

The Newport Police Department is responsible for enforcement, planning and education related to traffic safety in the city of Newport. Traffic and parking congestion in Newport is a common source of complaints among Newport residents and visitors. There are many facets to traffic safety risk management, including vehicle operation and pedestrian safety. The Newport Police Department will provide professional, fair and consistent enforcement of traffic and parking regulations, with the goal to gain voluntary compliance of laws designed to promote public safety and increase the quality of life for residents and visitors. All road users must take personal safety responsibility based on their particular road use intentions and activities.

The Newport Police Department will use the funds from this grant to develop an action plan that will identify locations to monitor and direct enforcement efforts. These efforts will be through supplemental police details. The action plan will allow for the identification of categories of road users, distinguish day and night variables, and the issuance of media announcements. It will also allow for traffic, parking and crosswalk monitoring, collaboration and coordination with public and private partners and special events, and follow up meetings with stakeholders for the identification of safety risks.
