Recycling Drop-OffThe Clean City Program accepts the following items at the Recycling Drop-Off Area. This is a free service to Newport residents. Residents should call the Newport Clean City Program Office at 845-5613 to make sure someone will be able to assist you. We are located at 80 Halsey St. in the city yard. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Leaving any items in the city compound is considered to be ILLEGAL DUMPING. The Clean City Program only accepts the items below and does NOT accept car batteries (please return these to a car battery vendor), paints, antifreeze, gasoline and other hazardous waste. Please call ahead to recycle the following items. ELECTRONIC WASTE By recycling electronic waste, hazardous materials are kept out of the waste stream, and out of the central landfill. Electronic waste often contains heavy metals such as lead and mercury and the responsible disposal of these items will help keep toxins out of our environment. Electronic waste includes computers, printers, scanners, televisions, laptops, fax machines, cd-roms, dvd-roms, vcr's, audio equipment, video games, disc drives, modems, cards, keyboards, computer mice, electronic wires or plugs, pc speakers, recording, surveillance or camera equipment, digital cameras, cell phones & accessories, lcd products The Clean City cannot accept items primarily made out of plastic that are not considered electronic, such as small appliances, hair dryer, blenders, and the like. If you have a question about what's accepted, please call us. Used inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges, cell phones & accessories can also be recycled. MOTOR OIL & FILTERS Oil must not be mixed with any other substance such as water or antifreeze. There is a 5 gallon limit per resident per visit. FLUORESCENT BULBS, MERCURY DEVICES & BATTERIES It is very important to recycle any item containing mercury so it does not containminate our envrionment and water supply. The following items are accepted for recycling: compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), rechargeable batteries: NiCad/Ni-MH, lithium ion; "button" batteries: used in watches, calculators, hearing aid & cameras, thermometers, thermostats, light switches, blood pressure cuffs, barometers, older toys containing mercury. The Clean City Program can no longer accept alkaline batteries for recycling. Alkaline batteries made after the late 1980'd are NOT hazardous and can be thrown away in your regular trash. COOKING OIL Next time you are using a large amount of cooking oil, simply pour the cooled oil back in the container it came in and bring it down to the city yard for recycling. Oil must not be mixed with any other substance. The oil is recycled by Newport Biodiesel and turned into biodiesel fuel. PLASTIC BAGS & PLASTIC FILM Any plastic bag or plastic film that is clean & dry can be recycled. This includes plastic grocery & shopping bags (any store, drawstring ok); clean & dry produce bags; newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning film, toilet paper & paper towel packaging; bread, bagel & sandwich roll bags. It is best to tie bags in a knot and put in another plastic bag and drop them off when the bag is full. Exceptions: If a bag is dirty or wet, tie in a knot and discard in your regular trash. NO plastic food wrap. The following items can be dropped off anytime, without our assistance: CARDBOARD Flattened cardboard may be dropped off at 80 Halsey St, regardless of size. Cardboard must be free of inside packaging such as bags or styrofoam. Cardboard must also be flattened. If you have just moved here and need to recycle a large amount of packing paper, please call the Clean City Program at 845-5613 to make arrangements. Leaving cardboard outside of the cardboard dumpster is illegal dumping. If the dumpster is full, please see the Clean City Program. BOOKS Any type or style of books is accepted for recycling, including books for children and adults, paperbacks, used textbooks and hardcover books. Books on tape and DVDs can also be recycled. This recycling program cannot accept magazines, phonebooks, and books with mold or mildew on them. Books can be placed in plastic bags. Cardboard boxes will not be accepted in the book containers, please use the cardboard only dumpster at the city yard. All donations are tax deductible. The new self-service drop slot containers allow residents to come anytime to recycle their unwanted books. These bright blue containers have been placed at the city yard in the Clean City Program's Recycling Drop-off area. Please note that the Clean City Program can no longer accept books packed in boxes. Books will be donated to Reading Tree, a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own books. Reading Tree provides an ongoing source of books to children in disadvantaged areas, schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, family literacy programs and international community libraries. Over 1 million books have been given to kids in 2008. For more information and information on your tax-deductable donation, visit their Web site. Newport businesses that have room in their parking lot can also host a book recycling container. This is a great opportunity for Newport residents to recycle books and know that they will be reused, recycled and donated to a good cause.
CLOTHING & TEXTILES Any type of textiles including clothing in any condition, including clothing items that are in good, usable items (any size, gender, season), other cloth items such as sheets, towels, curtains, table linens, blankets, area rugs, throw pillows (no bed pillows). Worn out clothing and textiles will be accepted along with usable items. Clothing is recycled through Big Sisters of Rhode Island, a statewide non-profit mentoring organization with the specific mission to positively impact the lives of at-risk girls. By recycling clothing, we can promote reuse and keep it out of the landfill while helping out a local Rhode Island non-profit.
