Broadway Streetscape Improvement Project
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) in conjunction with the CIty of Newport is working on a project to completely upgrade the Broadway corridor from building to building. New street elements will include new curbing, widened exposed aggregate sidewalks, paver accent elements, permeable paver systems in parking areas and rain garden bioswales to treat rainwater runoff, raised decorative crosswalks with pedestrian bump-outs along with other pedestrian and bike safety elements, benches, bike racks, planters, bus shelters, waste receptacles and other amenities, decorative LED lighting, new trees, signage upgrades, and drainage upgrades.
Hunter Park Tennis Courts and ADA Improvements
The Hunter Park tennis courts located adjacent to Third Street will be upgraded this construction season to restore one of the tennis courts and to convert the other into three pickle ball courts. The project also includes the installation of ADA sidewalks to make the courts and playground area accessible, as well as a geo-fabric grass maintenance access road, and new fencing.

Thames & Spring Streetscape Improvements
A two day Public Workshop Event was led by the design consultant Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc. (VHB) and Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to engage the public to help in creating a vision for the future of Thames and Spring Streets.
We encourage everyone to visit the Engage Newport page and the project website to offer more comments and context for the design of one Newport's best places.
