Southern Portion of Cliff Walk Closed for Repairs

Majority of Cliff Walk Remains Open for Pedestrians

NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, April 4, 2024) – A portion of the southern end of Newport’s idyllic Cliff Walk has been closed for repairs.

The decision follows the discovery of a sinkhole first reported by a community member through the City’s 311 ReportIt! Newport app.

The roughly ¼ mile-long closure, which extends from the tunnel due east of Clarendon Court to the stairs leading to the Miramar sidewalk, is part of the Cliff Walk’s more rugged southern section.

NEWPORT, R.I. (MARCH 28, 2024) – Newport households and businesses enrolled in the City’s Newport Community Electricity program can expect to see a decrease in their electric rates this spring.

Residential customers enrolled in the City’s default community plan can expect electric rates of 10.291 cents/kWh, which is below those being offered by Rhode Island Energy’s Last Resort Service of 10.377 cents/kWh. The new prices are fixed for six months and will go into effect in May 2024.

Current participants do not need to take any action to remain in the program and receive the new pricing for the product in which they are currently enrolled.

Traffic Restrictions in Place for St. Patrick's Day Parade

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Motorists are advised that traffic  traffic flow and parking throughout Newport will be significantly affected by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which kicks off ☔️ rain or shine 🌞 at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 16.

The Newport Police Department is advising motorists that traffic will be congested in the downtown area from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and parking will be limited.
