Register to Vote in the 2023 Special Election

Registering to vote is the first step every citizen takes to become an eligible voter.

Rhode Island now accepts online voter registrations if you have a Rhode Island-issued Driver’s License or State ID. You may register to vote or update your voter registration online by using the Secretary of State's website: https://vote.sos.ri.gov.

To register in person, simply complete a Voter Registration Form by clicking here.

Please note that you may register to vote at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must be registered at least 30 days in advance. If you have moved out of state or otherwise wish to cancel your voter registration, please submit an Affidavit for Cancellation and Removal to our office.

Registration Requirements:

You must be a citizen of the United States
You must be a legal resident of Rhode Island
You may pre-register at age 16 but you must be at least 18 years of age to vote on Election Day

If you move or change your name you are required to update your voter registration.

Voting by Mail

Every election, millions of voters around the country, including our military and overseas voters, cast their ballots by mail. The Secretary of State's Office has compiled a helpful guide for mail voting, which can be downloaded here.

Emergency & Early Voting

Early voting is available 20 days before an election at City Hall. Anyone who hasn't applied for a mail ballot may vote in-person at City Hall, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (except legal holidays, and 4 p.m. on the final day of the Early Voting period, per RIGL). No appointment is necessary.

This is a great option if you are unable to vote at your usual polling place on Election Day, or if you have run out of time to request a mail ballot. Voting early in-person is very similar to voting at a polling place.

Information for Military & Overseas Voters

Absent service members, and their eligible family members, as well as citizens residing overseas may be eligible to vote using the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA).
