APRIL YARD WASTE COLLECTIONS

Yard waste collections will occur four (4) weeks during the month of April beginning on April 3rd. Collections occur on your normally scheduled collection day. Waste Management will collect leaves, grass clippings and branches less than four inches in diameter (and no more than three feet in length) placed either in paper bags, tied in bundles or in 32-gallon garbage cans (Yard Waste Only sticker NOT required). Any yard waste material placed in plastic bags will be left behind on the curbside.

If your yard waste collection was missed, please call the Waste Management Customer Service line at (401)-847-0230 so that they may schedule a revisit if appropriate.

Please note that residential property owners may bring excess yard waste and brush to the Waste Management Transfer Station. Disposal of excess and oversized yard waste at the transfer station is not counted as one of the two free dumps offered to residential property owners and may be done without fees. Property owners must be with the load and provide government issued photo ID and proof of residency (tax bill or water bill). NO EXCEPTIONS.


SPRING RECYCLING DAY
Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon
at Easton’s Beach, 175 Memorial Boulevard, Newport, RI.
 
In conjunction with the 54th anniversary of Earth Day, the City of Newport will be hosting the annual Recycling Day on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at Easton’s Beach, 175 Memorial Boulevard, Newport, RI. Our annual Recycling Day event is for “harder to recycle” items. Please note that event is free and open to City of Newport residents only. Proof of residency is required.
 
This year’s event will include the following opportunities for City of Newport residents:
  • Electronic Waste Recycling: Indie Cycle, LLC will be accepting electronic items including computers, laptops, monitors, televisions, routers, PDAs, cell phones, mice, keyboards, ink-jet printers, toner cartridges, CD/DVD players, radios, cameras, network equipment, wires, stereos, speakers, telephones, microwaves, small household appliances, and acid lead batteries such as auto/marine and back-ups.  Anything with a wire! A $10 disposal fee will be charged for large wooden encased speakers ($5 for small), laser-jet printers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, dorm-sized refrigerators, water coolers and other coolant-containing devices. Please note, all above should not be actively leaking. Additional charges may apply to large copy machines and printers. Indie Cycle does not accept light bulbs, single use batteries, plastic tapes/disks, glass plates or bowls, broken TV tubes or hazardous materials.   • Paper Shredding: Bring up to 3 banker boxes of sensitive paper documents to be shredded. 3 boxes limit for each resident for shredding will be enforced. No commercial businesses accepted. ONLY sensitive documents, no magazines or newspapers.
  • Clothing and Textiles: Big Brothers Big Sisters of RI will be available to accept donations of clothing and other textiles. Clean textiles with tears or stains are accepted. Please visit www.DonateRI.org for more information.
  • Scrap Metal: Metal hangers, pots, pans, metal chains, screws, nails, and any other item that is primarily made out of metal. NO items containing Freon or hazardous waste accepted in the metal container.
  • Rigid Plastics: Acceptable items are 100% rigid plastic with non-plastic parts removed, empty and free of all materials and liquids, have never held hazardous materials or waste, are smaller than a 95-gallon recycling/trash cart and larger than a hard hat, and are not drums or barrels of any size. Examples of items that fit the criteria include: hard hats (interior lining removed), buckets/pails (metal handles okay), laundry baskets, lawn furniture, milk/soda/beverage crates, plastic election campaign signs (wire mounting stands removed), plastic shelving, storage totes/bins/trays/lids, trash/recycling bins/compost bins, trash/recycling carts (axles, wheels and metal handles removed).
  • Cardboard: Flattened cardboard only. No paper or packing materials accepted.
  • Cooking Oil: Newport Biodiesel will be accepting all vegetable cooking oil for recycling.
  • Bulky Waste Items for Disposal: TWO Bulky items (ex: one couch, one table) per household maximum (there is a six-item max for homeowners who own multiple homes). Proof of residency MUST be presented on the day of the event. ELIGIBLE BULKY ITEMS DO NOT INCLUDE hazardous waste (including refrigerators, air conditioners and dehumidifiers), electronics, plastic bags, mattresses or Styrofoam.
 
What we will NOT accept at this event:
  • No Household Hazardous Waste will be accepted at this event. RIRRC will hold the Eco-Depot event for the collection of household hazardous waste in Newport on Saturday, October 14th at Easton’s Beach from 8 am to 12 noon. For more information on Eco-Depot events for household hazardous waste disposal, please visit https://www.ecodepotri.org or call RIRRC at 401-942-1430 ext. 3241.
  • No Styrofoam will be accepted at this event. Please reuse it or bring your Styrofoam to RIRRC at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston, RI.
  • NO Mattresses will be accepted at this event. Newport residents are eligible to participate in the Mattress Recycling Program. Mattresses that are clean, dry and free of infestation may be brought to the Waste Management Transfer Station located at 65 Halsey Street, (401) 847-0230 for FREE.
  • No Plastic Bags will be accepted at this event. Please reuse them or bring your plastic grocery bags and other types of clean & dry plastic film to local retailers for inclusion in their recycling program (Stop & Shop, TJ Maxx, Shaw’s, etc.)
 
IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • There will be no entry until 8 a.m. and gates will close at 12 noon.
  • This event will be held rain or shine.

BULKY WASTE COLLECTION PROGRAM

Our Bulky Waste Program got a little more user-friendly!

Newport residents looking to dispose of bulky waste will no longer need to obtain collection stickers from City Hall!

As part of the City’s new trash contract, beginning July 1st, all requests and payments for bulky waste and white goods collection items can be made directly through the City’s hauling company, Waste Management by calling ๐Ÿ‘‰1-800-972-4545 ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Items will continue to be collected on the first and third Thursday of each month, including the following:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Bulky Items - these items include but are not limited to couches, upholstered furniture, wooden furniture, mattresses, etc. The collection cost per item is $31.50
๐Ÿ‘‰ White Goods/Appliances- these items include but are not limited to stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers washers dryers, air conditioners etc. the collection cost per item is $42.00

For more information on whether or not an item is acceptable for collection, please consult with a Waste Management call center agent.

Once full payment has been made and your collection appointment has been scheduled, the agent will supply a reference or ticket number as your confirmation. Items must be curbside by 6 a.m. on the day of your appointment. Missed appointments will result in the need to contact the Waste Management call center to again make payment and schedule another appointment. No refunds will be given unless cancellation of a scheduled appointment is made by contacting the Waste Management Call Center with your confirmation number by noon the day before the scheduled collection. Please keep in mind that leaving items curbside for longer than 24 hours may result in a fine per City ordinance.
 

E-WASTE RECYCLING

Indie Cycle, LLC provides electronics recycling drop-off options at events throughout RI. These events welcome people from neighboring cities and towns. No residency requirements and no appointments necessary! Fees may apply.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

The Eco-Depot is a free service for Rhode Island residents to allow for proper disposal of household hazardous waste. Household hazardous waste is anything labeled with skull and crossbones, or words like 'toxic', 'poison', 'flammable', 'combustible', etc. Examples include mercury devices, automotive fluids, gasoline, propane tanks, fertilizers, pesticides, pool chemicals, and polishes.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery (RIRRC) has events scheduled throughout the State beginning on March 25th and continuing through December 2nd. Please check the RIRRC website for the most up-to-date information.

RESIDENTIAL YARD WASTE

YARD WASTE COLLECTIONS occur on your normal scheduled collection day (except where noted one day delay for holiday) and are scheduled: one week in January, one week in March, four weeks in April, every other week from May through October, three weeks in November and one week in December. Waste Management will collect leaves, grass clippings and branches less than four inches in diameter (and no more than three feet in length) placed either in paper bags, tied in bundles or in 32-gallon garbage cans (no Yard Waste Only sticker required). Any yard waste material left in plastic bags will be left behind on the curbside. Please see above link for the 2023 Holiday and Yard Waste Calendar.
 
For disposal of larger tree branches, brush or stumps that do not qualify for the Yard Waste Collection program, residential property owners may bring excess yard waste and brush to the Waste Management Transfer Station. Disposal of excess and oversized yard waste at the transfer station is not counted as one of the two free dumps offered to residential property owners and may be done without fees. Property owners must be with the load and provide government issued photo ID and proof of residency (tax bill or water bill). NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you are unable to transport the materials yourself, you may contract with a private contractor. However, to avoid the disposal fees, the property owner must be present with the load and present government issued photo id and proof of residency (copy of tax bill or water bill).

TEXTILE RECYCLING
 
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) has placed their TEXTILE DONATION BINS in the City of Newport. These collection bins are an easy and convenient way to donate your clothing and textiles and help divert materials from the landfill. BBBSRI donation bins are available year-round at the Edward King House and the Self-Service Recycling Center at City Yard. BBBSRI accepts all clothing, shoe, household linen and other fabric donations. Any textile that is donated should be clean, dry and bagged and placed INSIDE THE BIN. Please do not place items outside the bin. Gently used and ripped/torn or stained items are accepted.

SHREDDED PAPER
 
Shredded paper may be disposed of bagged with your regular household trash. It should not be placed in your recycling cart.
 
Alternatively, Rhode Island Resource Corporation (RIRRC) accepts shredded paper, secured in a bag at their small vehicle area drop off container located at 65 Shun Pike in Johnston. You may also look for local shredding drop off events (see link below) or compost shreds in backyard compost bins.

Spring Recycling Day Returning to Easton's Beach

In conjunction with the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, the City of Newport is inviting residents to take part in the return of its annual Spring Recycling Day on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 8 a.m. to noon at Easton’s Beach, 175 Memorial Blvd.  

The annual event is specifically intended for “harder to recycle” items including E-Waste, clothing, and textiles, scrap metal, rigid plastic, and cooking oils. Free paper shredding for up to three banker’s boxes will also be offered on-site.   Please note that this will be the only City sponsored recycling event held this year, and is open to City of Newport residents only
