VOLUNTEER CLEANUP INFORMATION
Litter Kits Available

The Clean City Program has been awarded a microgrant to provide littering supplies to local neighborhood groups interested in getting more involved with keeping their neighborhoods and public spaces clean, safe and attractive for themselves, their families, and visitors. By raising awareness and providing the supplies, we hope to encourage groups of all ages to join in the clean-up effort at the many beautiful local City parks and public spaces.

The Clean City Program has a limited supply of cleanup materials (trash bags, gloves, trash pickers & buckets) for use by volunteer groups as they help to make our City a better place to live, work and visit. The Clean City Program will provide assistance with the coordination of trash pickup for volunteer groups who register their cleanup efforts with us.

How to sign up? It’s easy! Just contact the Clean City program at CleanCity@CityofNewport.com or 401-845-5617.

What we will need to know:
  • DATE/TIME of the cleanup (and a rain date if applicable)
  • LOCATION – please let us know your area of interest or we can provide you with a suggestion of one of City’s many beautiful parks and community spaces. We may need to prioritize based on number of responses and areas of need.
  • CONTACT PERSON for your group and how they may be reached via cell phone on the day of the scheduled event.
What you need to know? Please see attached Volunteer Cleanup Information Sheet.

The City of Newport is a beautiful place to live and work and we appreciate our community partners’ efforts in helping to keep it that way! For more information on Governor Dan McKee’s Litter-Free RI Program and to sign the litter-free pledge, please visit; https://litterfree.ri.gov/take-pledge .

We oversee the collection and disposal of recyclables, trash, and leaf and yard waste throughout the City's residential neighborhoods. Our goal is to provide a clean and green Newport so that residents and visitors can enjoy its true beauty.

RESIDENTIAL YARD WASTE

YARD WASTE COLLECTIONS occur on your normal scheduled collection day (except where noted one day delay for holiday) and are scheduled: one week in January, one week in March, four weeks in April, every other week from May through October, three weeks in November and one week in December. Waste Management will collect leaves, grass clippings and branches (less than four inches in diameter and no more than three feet in length) placed either in paper bags, tied in bundles or placed loose in 32-gallon garbage cans (no Yard Waste Only stickers required). Yard waste is limited to 20 bags, barrels or bundles per household and each should weigh less than 50 pounds. Dirt, rocks and construction debris should not be included with yard waste materials.  Any yard waste material placed in plastic bags will be left behind on the curbside. Please see above link for the 2025 Holiday and Yard Waste Calendar.

For disposal of larger tree branches, brush or stumps that do not qualify for the Yard Waste Collection program, residential property owners may bring excess yard waste and brush to the Waste Management Transfer Station. Disposal of excess and oversized yard waste at the transfer station is not counted as one of the two free dumps offered to residential property owners and may be done without fees. Property owners must be with the load and provide government issued photo ID and proof of residency (recent tax bill or water bill). NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you are unable to transport the materials yourself, you may contract with a private contractor. However, to avoid the disposal fees, the property owner must be present with the load and present government issued photo id and proof of residency (copy of recent tax bill or water bill) to the scale house attendant.
