Training Office
The Newport Police Department Training Office is one of the support functions of the agency. The training office mission is to facilitate practical training, didactic training and continuing education in order to equip the Newport Police Sworn and Civilian personnel to effectively conduct their duties in an efficient, legal and service oriented manner.
The training office meets its goals and objectives by relentlessly pursuing modern training techniques and venues in fulfillment of the local and National call for greater professionalism and training in the police profession. The training office embraces the challenge of providing the appropriate quantity and quality of training to staff already engaged in a demanding full time public service mission by prioritizing training opportunities based upon the agency and community needs. The training office staff is continually reassessing where the department can strive for training improvement to maximize officers’ competent service and safeguarding of our community members and visitors alike.
Our goals and objectives focus on high priority skills expected of Newport Police Personnel. These skills include but are not limited to both internal and external training topics in the following areas of expertise:
Implicit Bias and Ethics Less Lethal and Chemical Munition Deployment
Handcuffing Open Hand Techniques and Unarmed Self Defense
School Safety and Drug Awareness ECW (Taser) and Body Camera Deployment
Active Shooter and Rescue Task Force Field Training Program
Legal and Procedural updates Investigation Techniques
NIMS Incident Command Systems Crime Scene and Reconstruction Investigations
Crisis Intervention/ Stress Management Firearms Proficiency
DUI and Field Sobriety Testing Diversity and Inclusion
Motorcycle and Police Bicycle Drone Certification and Operations
Coordinated Support to SRT Background and Internal Affairs investigations
Supervisory and Professional Development Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Response
BLS/TECC/ CPR and NARCAN Deployment Crimes against Elderly and Children
Financial and Cyber Crimes Civil Disturbance Operations
Hate Crimes Support to the RI Municipal Police Academy

By maintaining certifications in the numerous masteries required in modern policing by officers throughout this agency and accredited instructors statewide, the training office pledges its commitment to the community for continued excellence in service by creating highly trained and well-rounded police officers.
