Parking will remain free until June 1
st
NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 29, 2020) –
It will be free to park at metered spaces and municipal parking lots throughout the City for the entire month of May.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the City announced on Tuesday that the start of the Newport’s annual Parking Meter program is being delayed until June 1, 2020. The start of the Residential Parking Program, which normally runs from May 1
st
through October 1
st
, is also being delayed until June 1
st
.
This year, on-street metered parking will be in effect from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. daily from June 1st through October 31st, including weekends and holidays. Paid parking at the Gateway Center, Mary Street Lot, and Pay and display parking at the Touro Street Lot, Long Wharf Lot, and Narragansett Avenue (near Forty Steps), is also expected resume June 1
st
.

On-Street Meters
On-street metered parking will be in effect from 9 a.m. through 9 p.m. daily from June 1st through October 31st, including weekends and holidays. The fee for parking in a metered space is $1.25 per hour in increments of twenty-five cents. The fee for the meters on Memorial Blvd. at Easton’s Beach is $2 per hour. All city meters accept credit cards or coins. The minimum for credit card payments is one hour.
Pay & Display
The pay & display parking units located at the Touro Street lot, Long Wharf Lot, and Narragansett Ave (near Forty Steps), accept Credit Cards, bills, and coins. The rate is $1.25 per hour in 1 hour increments. A resident sticker does not permit residents to park for free at metered spaces.
Public Paid City Parking
Parking fees will be in effect at the Gateway Visitor’s Center parking lot as of June 1st. Parking rates are $2 for the first half-hour and $1.50 for each subsequent half-hour. Weekly and monthly rates are also available.
The Mary Street Parking Lot operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Mary Street is a self-pay, pay & display parking lot. The rates are $3 per hour and $20 per day. City residents with a valid resident sticker are entitled to up to three hours of free parking once per day at the Mary St. lots. Residents must enter their license plate number in the pay station and, if parking for three hours or less, there will be no charge. A receipt must be displayed on the dashboard of all cars.
Residential Parking Program
The Residential Parking Program is in effect from June 1st through October 1st. Parking is restricted in designated areas to vehicles displaying residential permits, a general visitor pass or temporary residential parking permit. Resident Stickers are available in the collections office at City Hall. Signage in each area will details the parking restrictions for that area.
