City Councilors last month voted to re-establish an Accessibility Advisory Commission, which will provide the Council with advice and recommendations to make Newport more accessible for residents and visitors alike.

Department of Utilities Provides Update on October & November Billing

NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, NOV. 18, 2025) – The City of Newport Department of Utilities is providing updated information regarding the October and November billing cycles as we continue our transition away from the legacy billing platform.
 
A payment batch was inadvertently posted twice in October during manual processing. Although the issue was corrected, it occurred after the October bills were generated, which caused some customers to see inaccurate balances. Updated October balances and the November bills are now correct.

NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2025) – The Newport Community Electricity program is announcing new winter electricity supply prices to go into effect beginning with the November 2025 meter read. The program’s winter pricing for the default electricity option is 10% less than last winter and will still offer cleaner electricity and cost savings compared to RI Energy’s Last Resort Service.

The new prices will be fixed for six months through customers’ May 2026 meter read. Current participants do not need to take any action to remain in the program and receive the new pricing for the product in which they are currently enrolled. Read more »

Fall Water Main Flushing Set to Begin

Island-wide Maintenance to run Oct. 13th-30th
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2025) – As part of the Newport Water Division’s ongoing maintenance of the water distribution system, a water main flushing program in designated areas will begin during evening hours beginning Monday October 13, 2025 and ending Thursday, October 30, 2025.

As in the past, flushing of the water mains using fire hydrants will begin at 8 p.m. and continue until 4 a.m. Signs will be posted in each area before flushing begins.

SPRING STREET PAVING SET FOR SEPT. 22nd

Project Expected to Take Two Weeks to Complete
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2025) -- Please be advised that the City of Newport, Department of Utilities, contractor J.R. Vinagro will begin full-width milling of the road surface on Monday, Sept. 22nd. 

The streets that will be affected are Spring Street, Dearborn Street, Perry Street, Dean Avenue, the intersection of Dearborn Street and Thames Street, and the intersection of Dean Avenue and Thames Street. Once the milling has been completed, the final paving will occur.  This work is expected to take 2 weeks.

Newport Launches Free Curbside Food Scrap Composting Pilot Program

2-Year Pilot Project Offering 1,500 Residents with Free Composting

NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2025) – The City of Newport is excited to announce the launch of a free curbside food scrap collection pilot program, in partnership with 11th Hour Racing, Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District, and Black Earth Compost.

This two-year program, running from October 5, 2025, to October 2, 2027, offers 1,500 eligible Newport residents free weekly compost collection (a $149.99/yr value) and a curbside bin starter kit ($36 value). Read more »
