Newport Names New Harbormaster

Former Block Island Harbormaster Stephen Land Awarded Top Harbor Post
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, March 23, 2021) – After a three-month search, the City of Newport has named former Block Island Harbormaster Stephen C. Land to the City’s top harbor post.
 
Land assumes the role following the sudden passing of longtime Harbormaster Timothy J. Mills in December.

Registration for Spring Programs Begins March 7th
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (March 5, 2021) – Spring is in the air and the team at Newport Recreation is gearing up for a pair of events to kick off the season.

The fun is set to begin on Saturday, April 3rd with the return of the City’s beloved Easter Egg Hunt. Cancelled last year due to concerns over the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s event has been designed from the ground up with social distancing in mind by featuring a series of mini Egg Hunts for Newport residents between the ages of 3 and 8 years old. City to Resume In-Person CPR Exams

Practical Exams set to Resume through the Newport Fire Department

​NEWPORT, R.I. (March 5, 2021) – The Newport Fire Department will resume offering in-person CPR practical exams for City staff and community members beginning later this month.
 
In order to ensure the safety of Fire Department personnel, anyone interested in taking a practical exam will be asked to answer health screening questions prior to entering the building; wear a surgical or N95 mask at all times; and provide their name, phone number and address for contact tracing purposes.

City Honors Longtime Harbormaster as 2020 Employee of the Year

NEWPORT, R.I. (March 1, 2021) – The City of Newport has continued its annual tradition in recognizing members of its City workforce, honoring more than 50 employees for their dedicated service to the community and posthumously awarding the 2020 Employee of the Year to late Newport Harbormaster Timothy J. Mills.
 
Now in its 24th year, the City’s annual Employee Recognition program was conducted differently this year because of the COVID pandemic.  Read more »

Newport Rec Set to Host St. Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt

NEWPORT, R.I. (February 26, 2021) – With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Newport Recreation will be hosting a special family-friendly and COVID-safe Treasure Hunt in Aquidneck Park on Saturday, March 13th beginning at 1 p.m.

Newport Joint Vaccination Clinic Rescheduled to Saturday

All Friday Appointments to Take Place on Saturday

NEWPORT, R.I. (February 18, 2021) – Due to the winter weather, the City of Newport's joint COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic scheduled for Friday, Feb. 19th at the CCRI Campus, has been postponed until Saturday, Feb. 20th.
 
All those with an appointment scheduled for Friday will be able to receive a vaccination at the same appointed time on Saturday.

Precautionary Boil Water Advisory Issued for Newport

Low Pressure Zone includes the entire City of Newport and the Easton Point Section of Town of Middletown

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Newport Water Division customers in the system's Low Pressure Zone are being advised as a precaution not to drink the water due to a water main break at Gould and Warner Streets earlier today.

The water main break, which took place at approximately 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 10th,
caused low pressure throughout the low pressure system.
 
As a precaution, customers in Newport and the Easton's Point section of Middletown are being advised to BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING OR SEEK ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLIES.  Read more »

Residents Urged to Keep Cars Off Streets, Utilize City Parking Lots

NEWPORT, R.I. (Saturday, Feb. 6, 2020) –  The City of Newport has issued a mandatory Parking Ban from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday, February 7, 2020 due to the impending snow storm. 

In order to help facilitate the City’s snow removal efforts, Newport residents are being urged to take advantage of free parking at the Gateway Visitor’s Center, Mary Street, and Easton’s Beach parking lots during the storm. Alternatively, residents are also encouraged to request the use of a neighbor’s driveway to secure off street parking to keep vehicles off the roadways. Read more »

New North End Rapid Test Site to Open

Park Holm Senior Center to Serve as Rapid COVID Test Site

NEWPORT, R.I. (February 3, 2021) – In support of the RIDOH’s effort to expand COVID-19 testing resources to Newport and the surrounding communities of Aquidneck Island and the East Bay, the RI National Guard, in coordination with the City of Newport and the Newport Housing Authority will be opening a Binax Now COVID-19 Rapid Test Site on Thursday, February 4th  2021 at the Park Holm Senior Center in the City’s North End.
 
The site, which is located at 1 Eisenhower St. in Newport, is free to all ages, and regular hours will be from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The testing site will remain in operation until further notice. Parking is available on site and along Hillside Avenue.   Read more »
