Parking Ban Issued Ahead of Winter Storm

Residents Urged to Keep Cars Off Streets, Utilize City Parking Lots

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, Feb. 1, 2020) –  The City of Newport has issued a mandatory Parking Ban from 12 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Monday, February 1, 2020 due to the impending snow storm. 

In order to help facilitate the City’s snow removal efforts, Newport residents are being urged to take advantage of free parking at the Gateway Visitor’s Center, Mary Street, and Easton’s Beach parking lots during the storm. Alternatively, residents are also encouraged to request the use of a neighbor’s driveway to secure off street parking to keep vehicles off the roadways. Read more »

Newport, Middletown to Open Joint Vaccination Site

Southern Aquidneck Island Vaccination Center to Open at CCRI Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (January 28, 2021) -- The City of Newport and Town of Middletown are expected to open a regional COVID-19 vaccination center in mid-February. Operating under the auspices of the state Department of Health, the “Southern Aquidneck Island Vaccination Center” will serve Newport and Middletown residents who are 75 years and older first.

Once that population is fully vaccinated, other segments of the community will be served next. The center will operate out of the Community College of Rhode Island campus on John H. Chafee Boulevard in Newport. Read more »

Dinghy Rack Lottery is Here!

Applications currently being accepted through Feb. 28th for kayak, dinghy owners

NEWPORT (Friday, January 29, 2021) – Kayakers and dinghy owners take note: The Newport Harbormaster’s Office will be accepting applications for dinghy and kayak rack spaces at the King Park and Willow Street dinghy racks beginning Feb. 1 st until Feb. 28th .

Spaces will be determined through a lottery system, with a drawing held on Friday, March 5, 2021 at 9 a.m. Read more »

City Launches Vaccine Pre-Registration Portal

Newport Residents Encouraged to Sign Up online in Anticipation of Vaccine Rollout
 
NEWPORT (Friday, January 29, 2021) – As the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) continues to prepare for the distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines in Rhode Island, the City of Newport is encouraging its residents to pre-register online with the City’s Emergency Management Agency at www.CityofNewport.com/Vaccine

Earlier this week, the City was notified that it has been allocated a limited first batch of vaccines (of approximately 120) and will be distributing those doses to a portion of our most vulnerable population beginning next week. Read more »

Newport Recreation Hosting Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt

Hunt will run from February 1st-14th

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, January 25, 2021) – Newport residents are being invited to Take It Outside for a special Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt beginning Monday, February 1st, 2021.

Newport Recreation Staff will be hiding 16 hearts outside and around various City landmarks and parks. Each of the hearts will have a single letter on it and participants will be challenged to find all 16 clues to decipher a Valentine’s Day quote. City Issues Call for Volunteers to Assist in COVID Vaccination

Healthcare Workers & Public Invited to Assist at Vaccine Sites

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, January 25, 2021) – As COVID-19 vaccination sites continue to roll out across the country, the City of Newport has issued a call for volunteers to help Newport get vaccinated.

The Newport Emergency Management Agency is currently seeking volunteers to work at a potential Medical Emergency Distribution System Point of Dispensing (MEDS POD) beginning as early as March. Read more »

State to Open New Local Rapid Testing Site

New National Guard, RIDOH Testing Site to Open in Downtown
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, JANUARY 21, 2021) – Newport area residents will soon have another option to secure a rapid COVID-19 test.

The City of Newport has been informed that beginning Tuesday, January 26, the Rhode Island Department of Health and Rhode Island National Guard, will be opening a Binax Now Rapid test site at 21 Brown and Howard Wharf in downtown Newport. Read more »

City Gearing Up for Special Election

Voter Registration Deadline Approaching
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, JANUARY 14, 2021) – Newport Canvassing officials are gearing up for a  special Statewide vote on a series of bond referenda scheduled for Tuesday, March 2nd.

Voters who participate in the election will be asked seven referenda questions authorizing the state to borrow up to $400 million through bonds and temporary notes to make capital investments in several different areas. A complete list of the bond questions and the costs associated can be found at the www.CityofNewport.com/NewportVotes.

As in last November's general election, voters will have three options to cast their ballot in the March 2 special election. Voters may choose to cast their ballot by mail, early in-person up to 20 days before the election, or at the polls on Election Day. Read more »

City Issuing Motor Vehicle Tax Bills

Annual Bills Being Mailed Dec. 28th
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, December 28, 2020) – The City of Newport is mailing fiscal year 2021 (July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021) Motor Vehicle Tax bills on December 28, 2020.  Taxpayers will be able to pay their annual taxes in four payments prior to June 30, 2021.  The payment due dates are: January 30, 2021, February 28, 2021, March 31, 2021, and April 30, 2021.

Motor Vehicle Tax bills are normally mailed in July with the Real Estate Tax bills.  The State of Rhode Island is phasing out motor vehicle tax bills and replacing local revenue with State Aid.  The phase-out is dependent on the State of Rhode Island annual operating budget and general laws.
