City Assisting Organizers of Peaceful Protest

Friday, June 12, 2020

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, June 12, 2020) – The City of Newport is providing support for a human rights demonstration scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 13 at Miantonomi Park in the City’s North End.

In addition to supplying staging and sound equipment for a speaker’s program, the City has also been working with organizers to ensure pedestrian safety for a planned march that will take demonstrators from Miantonomi Park to Equality Park.

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, June 5, 2020) – The City of Newport and its community partners are preparing to welcome demonstrators to Aquidneck Island on Saturday, June 6th for a planned peaceful demonstration sparked by the murder of George Floyd.
 
As a City, we fully support those who wish to exercise their Constitutional right to peacefully assemble and will do our part to make sure that any and all demonstrations are carried out in as safe a manner as possible.

City Offering Payment Plans for those Unable to Pay Utility Bills

NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, June 4, 2020) – Recognizing that we are still in challenging times, the City of Newport’s Department of Utilities is urging customers in Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth to set up payment plans or pay their utility bills if at all possible.

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, June 3, 2020) – The City of Newport issued the following statement related to the ongoing nationwide protests:
 
 
As the nation continues to mourn the murder of George Floyd, the City of Newport stands ready to do our part to protect and support all those who wish to exercise their Constitutional right to peacefully assemble.

While we are not aware of any credible threats to the City of Newport or Aquidneck Island, our public safety personnel are actively taking precautions to prepare for any potential unrest.

Easton’s Beach Set to Open for the Season June 4th

Beach to offer Limited Parking and Amenities
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, May 28, 2020) – The City of Newport has announced plans for a limited reopening of Easton’s Beach beginning Thursday, June 4th.
 
Beachgoers are advised that the beach lot will be open and lifeguards will be on staff daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Restrooms will also be open, though the City’s reserved bathhouses will remain closed for the foreseeable future. Parking capacity will be capped at 300 cars with limited parking for Newport residents available in the West Lot.

City Offering Grant Program for MicroEnterprises

Stabilization Grant Program for Small Businesses Adversely Impacted by COVID-19 Now Available
 

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, May 22, 2020) – The City of Newport has joined other Rhode Island communities in launching a Microenterprise (MicroE) Stabilization Grant Program offering working capital grants to qualifying small business microenterprises adversely impacted by COVID-19.

Grants totaling up to $5,000 are available to each approved applicant in a single lump-sum payment. Newport  has access to a total of $50,000 for MicroE grants. No City funds are involved.

Restaurants Asked to Submit Plans for Outdoor Dining

NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, May 19, 2020) – As Rhode Island begins to re-open for business, restaurants interested in offering outdoor dining are being asked to submit plans to the City to allow for expanded operations that would otherwise require Zoning or Council approval.

Parking Meters, Residential Parking Go into Effect June 1st

Parking Programs Return after COVID-19 Delay

NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, May 19, 2020) – The City of Newport’s metered parking and resident sticker programs will go into effect on June 1st. 
 
Metered parking will be in effect from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays. The fee for parking in a metered space is $1.25 per hour in increments of twenty-five cents. The fee for the meters on Memorial Boulevard at Easton’s Beach is $2 per hour.  Read more »

Easton’s Beach Bathhouse, Reserved Parking Programs Suspended due to COVID-19

Staff expecting scaled back operations at Easton’s Beach for 2020
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, May 14, 2020) – In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing public health concerns, both the bathhouse and reserved parking pass programs at Easton’s Beach have been discontinued for the 2020 season.
 
We are terribly disappointed to have to cancel these wonderful community amenities, however as we continue to develop our plans for the upcoming season it is critical that we adjust our operations in order to provide for the safety of both our beachgoers and the community at large. At this time, a reopening date for the beach is still unknown as we await guidance from the Governor and State health officials. Read more »

Aquidneck Island Communities Launch Joint Recovery Effort

Aquidneck Island Economic Recovery Partnership aims to align local business response
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, May 13, 2020) – Aquidneck Island’s three municipalities are banding together to help the island’s economy recover from the COVID-19 outbreak.
 
The City of Newport and the Towns of Middletown and Portsmouth have announced a joint effort to help businesses re-open and job seekers get back to work as quickly and as seamlessly as possible.
