City Welcoming Renowned Classical Guitarist to Benefit School Music Programs

NEWPORT -- The Newport Hospitality Commission is excited to announce the return of world-renowned classical guitarist Diego Campagna to Newport for a special concert to benefit the City’s music programming at Thompson Middle School.

Campagna, a native of Imperia, Italy, will help kick off Memorial Day Weekend with a performance on Thursday, May 23^rd at St. Mary’s Church on Spring Street, beginning at 6 pm.

Parking Season is in Effect

NEWPORT -- On-street metered parking is back in effect for the summer season.

Motorists are reminded that metered parking in the City's downtown area runs from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily, May 1st through October 31st, including weekends and holidays. As a reminder, while most streets that fall within the residential parking zone will require vehicles to display a current residential parking sticker between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., others require stickers 24 hours per day.

Cliff Walk Recognized with two “Best Of Rhode Island” Awards

NEWPORT -- Newport’s world-famous Cliff Walk, the most popular tourist attraction in Rhode Island, was recently recognized by Rhode Island Magazine as the “Best Hike in Rhode Island” and “The Best Free Activity in Newport County.”

The Cliff Walk Commission, which oversees the 3.5-mile coastal trail, accepted the award on behalf of the many partners who have devoted their time and talent to caring for the popular attraction. “This is a true honor,” said Cliff Walk Commission Chairman Peter Janaros in offering thanks to all of the volunteers and City staff who care for the Walk throughout the year. Sailing Hall of Fame Coming to Newport

NEWPORT – It’s Official: The National Sailing Hall of Fame is coming to Newport.

City officials have formally closed on a deal to sell the upper two floors of the historic Armory building on Lower Thames Street to the National Sailing Hall of Fame for $1,685,000.

The sale was initially approved by the City Council in July of 2018 following several months of negotiations. A separate Council vote in September approved the division of the property into two condominium units.  Read more »

Survey Asks Residents, Business Owners to Weigh in on Crisis

NEWPORT, R.I. -- It’s been two months since a natural gas outage resulted in the loss of heat and hot water for thousands of Newport residents and businesses.
 
On Wednesday, the City of Newport released a survey in the hope of learning more about the kind of impact that the outage had on area residents, employees, and business owners.
