City, State & Federal Leaders Celebrate Innovate Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. -- City, State, and Federal officials gathered under sun-drenched skies on Monday, June 3rd, at the site of the former Sheffield Elementary School to mark the grand opening of Innovate Newport.

A joint effort between the City of Newport, the Economic Development Foundation of Rhode Island, and the Newport County Development Council (the non-profit arm of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce), the roughly $8 million project to convert the longtime school building into a hub for entrepreneurs with roughly 33,000-square feet of co-working, event, and private office space officially opened its doors this week.

Edward King House Senior Center to Offer Limited Services While Sewer Line Repairs Underway

Work expected to take approximately six weeks to complete

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, May 31, 2019) – The Edward King House Senior Center will be temporarily scaling back and relocating operations while crews work to replace a sewer line that services the historic Italianate building.

 The need for repairs was identified during a recent routine inspection, at which time it was determined a sewer line running from the facility was connected the City’s stormwater collection system. Work to replace the line is being expedited through an emergency procurement process and is expected to begin as soon as possible.
 
Meanwhile, programming at the King House is anticipated to continue, albeit on a more limited scale and at alternate locations. City staff are currently in the process of finalizing accommodations for many of the center’s popular health and wellness programs as well as its specialty groups and club activities with more details expected to be announced in the coming days. Free WiFi Coming to Easton's Beach this Summer

NEWPORT  — Visitors to one of Aquidneck Island’s most popular beaches will be able to enjoy free WiFi connectivity this summer courtesy of the City of Newport.

With beach season beginning on Saturday, May 25, 2019, the City is pleased to be offering free public WiFi service at Easton’s Beach this summer season.

Trash Collection Delayed for Memorial Day

NEWPORT -- The City of Newport would like to remind residents that the Waste Management Transfer Station will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2019 for the Memorial Day Holiday.

Monday through Friday collection services will be delayed one day. For a yearlong schedule of holiday trash pickup, be sure to download a .pdf copy of the City's Holiday and Yard Waste Calendar by clicking here. 

Also, please note that City offices will be closed for the day, but we'll respond to any inquiries as soon as possible upon our return.

Detour Slated for Bellevue Avenue at Catherine Street

Work Expected to Wrap up in Time for Memorial Day Weekend

NEWPORT -- Motorists who rely on Catherine Street are advised to anticipate detours in the area as road construction gets underway on Catherine Street at the intersection with Bellevue Avenue on Tuesday, May 21st. 

Work is expected to wrap up by Friday morning as crews complete a final concrete restoration project from previous work done by National Grid Gas.   The sub-contractor Hartford Paving will be completing the work and police officers will be onsite to facilitate traffic.  Anyone needing access to businesses or homes within closed section of Catherine will be allowed access via police officers onsite.

Sticker Program Hopes to Cut down on Overcrowded Dinghy Docks

NEWPORT, R.I. – With boating season just around the corner, the City’s Harbormaster’s Office is rolling out a new dinghy permitting program designed to help reduce the number of unattended vessels at the King Park Stone Pier.
 
Earlier this month, the City Council gave their approval to a new dinghy permitting program intended to reduce the number of unattended vessels at the Stone Pier and to provide smaller vessel owners a place in the harbor.

Historic Military Gravestone Clean Up Slated for Saturday!

NEWPORT, R.I. -- Members of the City's Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission will be gathering at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18th to help clean military stones located in Common Burying Ground on Farewell Street. 

This community service activity is a great way to start Armed Forces Day and prepare for the Memorial Day holiday!  Please join us to honor those who have served our country. The City will be provide all the needed equipment and know-how; all that's needed is a good group of volunteers with energy and enthusiasm.

City Asking Residents to Help Fill A Truck – With Food Donations

NEWPORT – The City of Newport’s Department of Public Services is joining hundreds of Public Works Departments from across New England to collect food and household goods to support our local community food bank needs. 

 Newport’s Fill-A-Public Works Truck Food Drive will be taking place during National Public Works Week, from May 19-25, 2019 and will support the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Food Bank.  Read more »

NEWPORT  – The City of Newport is pleased to launch today the first phase of a newly redesigned website intended to provide better access and more digital capabilities for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

2018 Consumer Confidence Report

The City of Newport’s Water Division announces that the 2018 Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is now available on the City’s website at www.cityofnewport.com/ccr18 . The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires water systems to provide this annual report to all its consumers.  The requirements for report content, format, and distribution were established by the EPA in the Consumer Confidence Rule, published in the Federal Register on August 19, 1998.
