Construction Updates
Here's the latest on the various City-led construction projects currently underway around town. Please note that work initiated by State and private utility contractors may not be reflected below.
Washington Square Emergency Water Main Replacement
Crews will be working to replace a failed water main at Washington Square and Thames Street beginning after
March 18th.
The repairs are emergency in nature and detours will be in place through the duration of the project, which is anticipated to take 6-8 weeks to complete.
Night work will be conducted in order to minimize impacts to businesses, however motorists should plan their routes accordingly.

Roadway Improvements 2024
Starting the week of
April 8th,
PJ Keating Construction will begin repaving work in the Fifth Ward on Wellington Avenue (Thames to Halidon), Halidon Avenue (Wellington to Harrison), Chastellux Avenue (Wellington to Harrison), Alpond Drive (Carroll to Jeffrey), and Jeffrey Road (Carroll to Ocean).
Construction is ongoing.
This year, the following streets will be receiving new pavement, granite curbing and, sidewalks where applicable:
Everett Street (From Broadway to Kay Street)
Kilburn Court
Park Street (From Gould to Broadway)
Please note that while the initial paving work is expected to move quickly, sidewalk and curbing improvements will stretch into fall before the final coat of pavement will be placed. More information will become available as work progresses.
As with all our projects, access to properties will be maintained with some inconveniences as the roadways are repaved, driveways are replaced and concrete sidewalks poured. Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 am to 4 pm as necessary to complete construction.
Hillside Avenue Safe Routes to School Project
Construction is
Complete
.
LAL Construction company is reconstructing the sidewalks along Hillside Avenue from Bedlow Avenue to Admiral Kalbfus Road plus making other minor sidewalk improvements from Admiral Kalbfus Road to Maple Avenue. New pavement striping will add bike lanes and other traffic & pedestrian safety improvements will be completed.
Though access to properties will be maintained, there will be some inconveniences as driveways are replaced, sidewalks are poured, and the road is repaved.
Parking may be restricted during the working week generally from 7 AM to 4 PM.
Please cut back your vegetation and remove any objects on the sidewalks, shoulders, and within the City's right-of-way.
Roadway Improvements 2023
Construction is complete.
LAL Construction company is reconstructing the following roadways Ledyard Street (

), Freeborn Street (

), and Grafton Street (
completed
). The Bragga Park (Kay Street) Parking Lot (
completed
) and Recreation Department ("The Hut") Parking Lot (
completed
) will also be paved.
Though access to properties will be maintained, there will be some inconveniences as driveways are replaced, sidewalks are poured, and the road is repaved.
Parking may be restricted during the working week generally from 7 AM to 4 PM.
Roads and sidewalks in poor condition will be replaced in-kind with the same types of materials. Existing bluestone curbing will be reset and deteriorated concrete curbing will be replaced with granite per ordinance. Pavement markings (e.g., stop bars) and signs will be improved.
Please cut back your vegetation and remove any objects on the sidewalks, shoulders, and within the City's right-of-way.
Spring Street - Touro Street Traffic Signal Improvement Project
Construction is ongoing.
RICON Construction company is reconstructing the sidewalks within the Spring Street/Touro Street intersection area. The traffic and pedestrian signals will also be replaced.
Though access to properties will be maintained, there will be some inconveniences as driveways are replaced, sidewalks are poured, and the road is repaved.
Parking may be restricted during the working week generally from 7 AM to 4 PM.

ββBroadway (Friendship Street to Bliss Road) Traffic Signal and Pedestrian Improvements
Construction is
substantially complete.
Cardi Corporation has finished installing the traffic signals. Remaining minor items of work including pavement markings and adjacent roadway sidewalk replacement will be completed. Businesses and sidewalks will be open, however, parking will be restricted in the immediate area during working hours as required.
Signage improvements have also been completed from Marlborough Street to Cranston Street.
Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 4 PM
β
Pavement Marking Improvements
Construction is ongoing.
βRoad yellow center line striping, crosswalks, stop bars, and other pavement markings will be repainted throughout the city. Because this work requires large areas of the City and negatively impacts traffic flow, the vast majority of the work occurs overnight (8 pm to 6 am). This work is ongoing and paint application is
highly weather dependent
(e.g., wet streets and cold weather prohibits paint installation).
Spring Street Water Main Replacement
Construction is ongoing.
The City's Utilities Department is currently in the process of replacing the water lines that run beneath Spring Street from
Narragansett Avenue to Perry Street and adjacent side streets.
Residents are asked to abide by "No Parking" signs placed on Spring Street to allow enough space for the construction.
Please note that parking may be restricted in the area during work hours, which are set for 6:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. However, local vehicle and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained throughout the project.
Our project team will be working diligently to minimize impacts. You may notice increased noise, lights used at night, traffic, crews, and heavy equipment (with backup safety alarms) associated with construction. Please take care when traveling around the construction area; for your safety, do not enter the site.
We appreciate your cooperation with this necessary infrastructure work.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the City’s Department of Utilities at (401) 845-5600.
Note that this is a critical and necessary infrastructure improvement, and work is expected to be completed in the Fall.
