Patrol Division
Community Policing Commander
The Patrol Division is commanded by Captain Michael Naylor and is made up of patrol officers who serve the public by patrolling the city using marked police cruisers, bicycles, motorcycles and on foot. The Department's Community Police Officers work in cooperation with the patrol officers.
Newport is divided into four distinct geographical areas:
- Northwest: The west side of Broadway from One Mile Corner to Summer Street, the north side of Van Zandt, the Point Section, Newport Heights and the Park Holm Neighborhoods.
- Northeast: The east side of Broadway, the south side of Van Zandt Ave to Farewell St, and east of America's Cup to Washington Sq to Old Beach Ave.
- Central: Washington Square south to Narragansett Avenue.
- South: Everything south of Narragansett Avenue.
Several smaller beat assignments serve the downtown business areas that are best patrolled on foot or on bicycle. These include the Lower Broadway business section and Upper Thames Street.
Additional walking and bicycling units are assigned to Lower Thames Street during tourist season and other times when additional coverage is required.
