Living in Newport

The City of Newport is located at the southern end of Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay, about 30 miles southeast of Rhode Island's capital of Providence.  The City is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the south, Narragansett Bay on the west, and by the Town of Middletown on the northeast.  Newport is 11 square miles in size, with 7.7 square miles of land and 3.3 square miles of inland water. Location is readily accessible to the west by Interstate 95 via the Jamestown and Pell Bridges, and to the north by Routes 24 and Interstate 195 via the Mount Hope Bridge and the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Second Public Meeting Slated on Prescott Hall Flooding

Public Invited to Share Thoughts In-Person & Online

NEWPORT, R.I. (WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 2022) – Newport’s Department of Utilities will be hosting an informational meeting in the Council Chambers at City Hall on Thursday, June 23rd at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the ongoing engineering study which seeks to address localized flooding that has been observed in the Prescott Hall Watershed.

City Offices Experiencing Network Outage

City Email, Online Services Temporarily Offline
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022) – The City of Newport is advising residents that certain online services and functions will be temporarily unavailable while IT personnel work to resolve an ongoing disruption impacting the City’s internal servers.

While the City’s website remains unaffected, a number of popular online functions have been temporarily suspended, and email services have been taken offline for the duration of the weekend.

Workshop Aims to Address Park Use & Safety

Tree and Open Space Commission Seeking Public Input for Potential Park Rules

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The Newport Tree and Open Space Commission will be holding a special workshop in the Program Room of the Newport City Library on Wednesday, June 8th from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. to hear from residents about how to improve the use and enjoyment of the City’s open space network.

The City’s park system comprises over 30 areas defined as parks or open space. These valuable public assets provide free and varied ways for residents and visitors to enjoy the natural environment. The Newport Tree, Park and Open Space Master Plan was adopted in 2017 with public input and provides a framework for managing these features of the natural environment.
