Construction Updates

Here's the latest on the various City-led construction projects currently underway around town. Please note that work initiated by State and private utility contractors may not be reflected below.

Roadway Improvements

Our Roadway Improvement Project 2025 contractor, Pawtucket Hot Mix Asphalt (PHMA), has begun work on Prescott Hall Road with additional streets to follow.  Below is a list of roadways included in the RIP2025.  This is the first City of Newport Bond roadway project.

Roadway Improvements
The following streets will have roadway pavement replaced and sidewalks replaced as required: Albro Street, Allan Court, Ayrault Street (Kay St to Catherine St), Barney Court, Barney Street, Congdon Avenue, Court House Street, Filmore Street, Heath Street, Johnson Court, Kingston Avenue, Pearl Street, Prescott Hall Road (on going), Russo Court, Southmayd Street, Stewart Street, Tilley Avenue, and Tompkins Court.
  • Roadway improvements include resurfacing the pavement, replacing sidewalks in poor condition, resetting curbing, and other miscellaneous items of work.
  • Residents will be informed by the contractor prior to start of construction on any given roadway.
  • As with all our projects, access to properties will be maintained with some inconveniences as the roadways are repaved, driveways are replaced and concrete sidewalks poured. Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 am to 4 pm as necessary to complete construction.  The contractor will place “No Parking” signs prior to construction start and inform residents of impending work.

  • Please note that while the initial paving work is expected to move quickly, sidewalk and curbing improvements will stretch into fall before the final coat of pavement will be placed. More information will become available as work progresses.
  • As with all our projects, access to properties will be maintained with some inconveniences as the roadways are repaved, driveways are replaced and concrete sidewalks poured. Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 am to 4 pm as necessary to complete construction.

Pavement Marking Improvements
  • Every year, pavement markings are repainted throughout the City includin road yellow center line striping, crosswalks, stop bars, and other pavement markings. Because this work requires large areas of the City and negatively impacts traffic flow, the vast majority of the work occurs overnight (8 pm to 6 am).  This work is ongoing and paint application is highly weather dependent (e.g., wet streets and cold weather prohibits paint installation).

Spring Street Water Main Replacement

  • Construction is ongoing.
  • The City's Utilities Department is currently in the process of replacing the water lines that run beneath Spring Street from Narragansett Avenue to Perry Street and adjacent side streets.
  • Residents are asked to abide by "No Parking" signs placed on Spring Street to allow enough space for the construction.
  • Please note that parking may be restricted in the area during work hours, which are set for 6:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays. However, local vehicle and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained throughout the project.
  • Our project team will be working diligently to minimize impacts. You may notice increased noise, lights used at night, traffic, crews, and heavy equipment (with backup safety alarms) associated with construction. Please take care when traveling around the construction area; for your safety, do not enter the site.
  • We appreciate your cooperation with this necessary infrastructure work.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the City’s Department of Utilities at (401) 845-5600.
  • Note that this is a critical and necessary infrastructure improvement, and work is expected to be completed in the Fall.
