Construction Updates
Here's the latest on the various construction projects currently underway
Roadway Improvements
Construction will begin this summer.
Pawtucket Hot Mix company is reconstructing the following roadways Poplar Street, Connection Street, and East Bowery Street. The Mary Street Parking Facility and Newport Fire Station #1 parking lot (West Marlborough) will also be repaved.
Though access to properties will be maintained, there will be some inconveniences as driveways are replaced, sidewalks are poured, and the road is repaved.
Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 4 PM.
Roads and sidewalks in poor condition will be replaced in-kind with the same types of materials. Existing bluestone curbing will be reset and deteriorated concrete curbing will be replaced with granite per ordinance. Pavement markings (e.g., stop bars) and signs will be improved.
Please cut back your vegetation and remove any objects on the sidewalks, shoulders, and within the City's right-of-way.
Sidewalk Improvements
Construction is ongoing.
Several areas throughout the City will have their sidewalks reconstructed, curbs reset, and disability access improved in accordance with the A
mericans with Disabilities Act. Sidewalk areas in poor condition will be replaced in-kind.
Project areas include:
Annandale Road
(Memorial Blvd to Berkeley Avenue):
ongoing; Ochre Point Avenue
(Narragansett Avenue to Webster Street): work scheduled this summer; and
Miscellaneous Handicap Accessibility Improvements
(wheelchair ramps will be added to existing crosswalks and others repaired): work scheduled.
Though ac
cess to properties will be maintained, there will be some inconveniences as driveways are replaced and sidewalks are poured.
Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 4 PM

Broadway (Friendship Street to Bliss Road) Traffic Signal and Pedestrian Improvements
Construction is ongoing.
A new traffic light will be installed at Broadway and Friendship Street. Sidewalks will be replaced. Pedestrian safety improvements will include sidewalk bump-outs at crosswalks (like lower Broadway). The Bliss Road intersection will be narrowed to greatly improve pedestrian safety.
Signage improvements will also be completed from Marlborough Street to Cranston Street.
Parking may be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 4 PM
Bellevue Avenue Improvements
Construction is completed for the spring.
AETNA construction company is working on Bellevue Avenue's concrete roadway surface which has areas in poor condition. The small areas will be repaired with fast setting concrete. Large panels in poor condition will be replaced in full. Due to the immensity of this ongoing maintenance issue, this is a multi-year project which will use funds to address the worst and most cost effective areas with distressed concrete.
Pavement Marking Improvements
Construction is ongoing.
Road yellow center line striping, crosswalks, stop bars, and other pavement markings will be repainted throughout the city. Because this work requires large areas of the City and negatively impacts traffic flow, the vast majority of the work occurs overnight (8 pm to 6 am). This work is ongoing and paint application is
highly weather dependent
(e.g., wet streets and cold weather prohibits paint installation).
Roadway Chip Seal Surface Treatment
Construction to be completed June 7-10, 2022.
Roads include:
Bateman Avenue, Brenton Road, Carroll Avenue, and Houston Avenue.
Parking will be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 5 PM on project roadways.
Chip Seal is completed by applying a thin film of heated liquid asphalt on the road surface followed by the placement of small stones (“chips”). The chips are then rolled into the pavement for maximum adherence to the asphalt and to improve skid resistance. Excess stone is swept from the surface over the next week or so.
Please note the chip sealing process is
weather dependent
and delays may occur if the road surface is wet.
This is a very fast moving process that should impose minimal impact to vehicular access to properties. Once the resurfacing has been completed on your street, any temporary on-street parking restrictions will be removed.
Chip Sealing is a cost effective and financially prudent method to extend the pavement life of a roadway by creating a liquid barrier and sealing cracks.
Please drive slowly over newly Chip Sealed roadways while the stone chips settle into the cured liquid asphalt.
Roadway Crack Sealing Treatment
Construction to be completed this late spring/summer
Many roads throughout the City are included in this program.
Crack Sealing is completed by cleaning out roadway cracks and applying a bead of heated asphalt liquid over and into the crack.
Parking will be restricted during the working week from 7 AM to 5 PM on project roadways.
This a very fast moving process that should impose minimal impact to vehicular access to properties. Once the crack sealing has been completed on your street, you may drive over the sealing.
Crack Sealing is a cost effective and financially prudent method to extend the pavement life of a roadway by creating sealing cracks and minimizing the water getting under the pavement which causes accelerated pavement deterioration.
JT Connell Highway Construction
Crews from the
Rhode Island Department of Transportation
have begun working to reconstruct the portion of JT Connell Highway from the Middletown line to the Admiral Kalbfus rotary.
Part of the forthcoming
Pell Bridge Realignment project
, the ongoing work includes the complete overhaul of the road surface as well as the installation of new sidewalks and pedestrian safety improvements. Currently, work is underway to repave the street from Maple Avenue to the Walmart Plaza entrance. As the work progresses, motorists should be prepared to encounter rough road conditions, traffic pattern changes, and to be mindful of work crews and pedestrians while construction is underway.
