EARTH MONTH RECAP - APRIL 2023

Litter and debris collected by volunteer groups in April totaled 1,678 pounds and counting! Thank you to all the groups that helped organize cleanups throughout the City. It’s never too late to help keep your neighborhoods and favorite parks clean and green. If you would like to organize a cleanup, please contact the Clean City Office at cleancity@cityofnewport.com and we will be happy to assist with the coordination of trash collection. Here are some highlights of the cleanups that happened throughout the City in April.

  • Cliff Walk (Marine Ave), on April 1st by Clean Ocean Access (COA) and Salve Regina University (72 pounds);
  • Miantonomi Park (trails) on April 2nd by the Park Commission (400 pounds);
  • King Park on April 22nd by Friends of the Waterfront and Friends of King Park with COA (250 pounds litter/debris and yard waste);
  • Broadway Neighborhoods by Off Broadway Neighborhood Association (OBNA) (280 pounds);
  • The Point Neighborhood, Parks & Driftways by the Point Neighborhood Beautification Committee on April 22nd (250 pounds);
  • Easton’s Beach on April 22nd by Save The Bay (121 pounds);
  • Citywide on April 15th and April 27th by Eastern RI Conservation District (ERICD) (115 pounds + 129 pounds);
  • Miantonomi Park by COA, Bike Newport & The Aquidneck Community Table (61.2 pounds).
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! One unfortunate aspect of being a popular destination location is the amount of litter left behind by improperly disposed of trash, high winds and critter intervention. City of Newport crews collected over 10,390 pounds of litter last year alone.

Not sure if you want to organize a cleanup yourself but are interested in joining like-minded individuals who want to make a difference in the local environment?
  • The Off-Broadway Neighborhood Association (OBNA) will be hosting a monthly cleanup on the first Saturdays of the month starting May 6th (meet up at Equality Park at 9 am). For more information, please contact Ellen Nichols at: obna02840@gmail.com. Gloves, litter sticks and trash bags will be provided or please feel free to bring your own supplies.
  • Clean Ocean Access (COA) hosts regular cleanups on Aquidneck Island. Please visit https://www.cleanoceanaccess.org for additional opportunities.
