Canvassing

The Canvassing Office is your source for election and voter registration information. Our office works hand in hand with a trio of accomplished civil servants appointed by the City Council to serve on the Newport Canvassing Authority. From helping voters register on time to tallying the votes on election day, our team is actively involved in all phases of the city's electoral process and cooperates with the Secretary of State and the State Board of Elections to ensure every election is handled with the utmost care.

Voter Registration

There are several ways to register to vote in Rhode Island. Whether you're a first-time voter, moved and need to update your voter information, or want to change your party affiliation, Newport's Canvassing office is here to help.

Register to vote during you next transaction with the DMV. Unless you opt-out, your information will be passed along to our office to be updated.
Mail in a paper Voter Registration Form or drop it off in person at the Canvassing Office in City Hall.
Register to Vote Online (Must have a RI Drivers License or RI State ID number to verify your identity in order to use this feature.)
Update My Registration Online (Must have a RI Drivers License or RI State ID number to verify your identity in order to use this feature.)
Please note that you may register to vote at any time, but to be eligible to vote in an upcoming election, you must be registered at least 30 days in advance. To be eligible in a party primary, you must be a member of that party or an Unaffiliated voter at least 30 days in advance of the primary.

Registration Requirements:
You must be a citizen of the United States
You must be a legal resident of Rhode Island
You may pre-register at age 16 but you must be at least 18 years of age to vote on Election Day
If you move or change your name you are required to update your voter registration.

If you have moved out of state or otherwise wish to cancel your voter registration, please submit an Affidavit for Cancellation and Removal to our office.

Ways to Vote in Rhode Island

RI Voters have several options when it comes to how we vote. You can:

Vote from Home with a Mail Ballot
Vote early at Newport City Hall for the 20 day period before Election Day. Early voting is available during regular business hours up until 4 p.m. on the day before Election Day. Don't forget to bring a valid photo ID.
On Election Day, you must vote at your assigned polling place. Check your polling place before each election as they can change from year to year depending on availability or the size of the election. Don't forget to bring a valid photo ID.

Participating in our electoral process is a vital part of our democracy and we're dedicated to ensuring that the process is easy to understand and accessible to all eligible voters.

Canvassing Board

The City's Board of Canvassers is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the election process, meeting regularly to prepare for upcoming elections.

Be a Poll Worker!

We are always looking for more help on Election Day. We have several paid positions available at each polling location every election. Training is provided and be aware that poll workers are required to be at the polls from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day.
