Tax Billing and Collections

Collection Division

Payments for Taxes, and Water bills, may be made online or in our office. Parking Tickets can be paid by credit card at the Newport Police Department or by cash or check at the Collections office.
Please note that the processing center will charge an additional 3.75% of the amount charged. The City absorbs the credit card fee for online water bill payments.

Collection Division Personnel are charged with the responsibility of receiving, posting and depositing funds for Real Estate, Motor Vehicle Excise and Tangible taxes, Water/Sewer payments, Parking Tickets and Municipal Court Fees. Parking program permits that are issued from the office include Resident Stickers, Guest Pass(es) & decals, Ledge Road Fishing Permits, King Park automobile & trailer permits.

Other Information

Municipal Court

The City of Newport established a Municipal Court system in 1987. It is presided over by one justice who adjudicates cases relative to City ordinance, parking and other traffic violations.

Court sessions are held each Monday (except Holidays) in the Council Chambers at City Hall at 1:30 p.m.

The Municipal Court Administrator's office is located in the Collection Office on the first floor and maintains the same hours of operation -- 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.. If you need further information, please call 401 845-5410

Fines may be paid at that location during normal business hours.

 


Tax Sale - General Information

The City of Newport holds one annual Tax Lien Sale for delinquent taxes on real properties situated in the City of Newport, generally during the month of August. 

The sale is held in accordance with Chapter 9 of the Rhode Island General Laws. Successful bidders at the sale will be issued a Tax Collector's Deed, which will be recorded in the Office of Land Evidence within the statutory time limit.
