Road Closures Planned for Broadway Street Fair

(Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019) --  With the annual Broadway Street Fair due to take place this weekend, the Newport Police Department are reminding residents and visitors that Broadway will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic between Gould Street and Farewell Street, as well as all of Washington Square, from 8 a.m. until approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12th. Motorists are advised that a small section of Bellevue Avenue, from William Street to Bowery Street, will be closed to traffic from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019) -- On Saturday, October 5, 2019 Audrain’s Newport Concours Tour d ’Elegance will take place in the City of Newport. The day begins with the Tour d’ Elegance parade of cars leaving Jamestown at approximately 7:45 a.m. and traveling over the Pell Bridge.

City Hires New Director of Planning & Economic Development

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2019) – The City of Newport on Wednesday announced the hiring of Patricia Reynolds as Newport’s new Director of Planning and Economic Development.

A native Rhode Islander and architect by training, Ms. Reynolds comes to Newport following a distinguished 24-year career with the City of Warwick, where she most recently served as Principal Planner. Read more »

Community Meeting Slated for Historic Hill Roadway Improvements

City Joining with Newport Restoration Foundation to Co-Host Lecture on Sea Level Rise

Newport, R.I. (September 12, 2019) – The Newport Restoration Foundation (NRF) and the City of Newport are pleased to co-host a talk entitled "Tackling Sea Level Rise through Digital Technology" at Innovate Newport (513 Broadway) on Wednesday, September 18 at 6 p.m.

The lecture will be given by Morris (Marty) Hylton III. Hylton will share his one-of-a-kind 3D visualization of sea level rise in Nantucket, Massachusetts created as part of a public-private partnership known as Resilient Nantucket. He will discuss how this work has contributed to a larger town-wide initiative to address the impacts of climate change on the community’s historic resources. The presentation promises to be thought provoking and shed light on how small coastal communities can begin planning for climate change. Read more »

City to Introduce new Emergency Alert System

Police Receive Grant Funding for New Equipment

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The U.S. Department of Justice provides funding for grants to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence. These funds are made available to local law enforcement agencies through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant (JAG) Formula Program: Local Solicitation. The Newport Police Department has participated in the Direct JAG Program in the past, and has been allocated $14,631 in the 2019 solicitation. Read more »
