We're Upgrading Our Parking Infrastructure

Changes are coming to Newport’s parking meter program. The City has partnered with LAZ Parking and Flowbird Group to introduce a pay-by-plate parking system and the expansion of Newport's Passport Operating System, allowing motorists to safely manage and pay for parking through their smartphones.

City Preparing for Two-Tier Residential Tax Program

Applications Being Mailed and Available for Online Download
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (MONDAY, Dec. 12, 2022) – Newport residents are being advised to be on the lookout this week for an official mailing from the Tax Assessor’s Office as City staff prepares to accept applications for the recently adopted two-tier residential tax program.
 
The program, which was adopted by the City Council earlier this fall, is intended to encourage year-round residency for both property owners and renters alike.
 

City to Kick Off Budget Process

Proposed FY2023 Budget Released, First Hearing Set for May 11

NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, April 26th 2022) – The City’s annual budget process is slated to get underway next week with the first of a series of planned budget workshops scheduled to take place on Tuesday, April 26th at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chamber.

The proposed FY2023 Budget, which can be found on the City’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/Budget, was presented to the Council earlier this month and will be advertised for its first public hearing on May 11.
Overall, the City is proposing a roughly $105 million operating budget, which includes $4 million in new debt service for the new Rogers High School and Pell School addition.

Cold War Veterans Now Eligible for Property Tax Relief

Exemption Available for Veterans who served from 1947 and 1991
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2021) – Newport homeowners who served in the military during the Cold War period from 1947 until 1991 are now eligible to qualify for property tax relief through the Rhode Island Veteran’s Exemption.

This provision, which was passed by the General Assembly early this year, also includes the widow/widower of a veteran who served during the Cold War.

Eligible property owners are asked to bring your DD214 to the Tax Assessor’s Office at 43 Broadway, any time beginning January 1st until March 15th to apply for the 2022-23 tax bill.

Applicants must be a Newport resident, and not claim an exemption in any other state.
No applications received after March 15th, 2022 will be eligible for the upcoming tax cycle. For further questions, please visit the City’s website at www.CityofNewport.com/TaxAssessor or call (401) 845 – 5363.

Canvassing Authority Meeting

The Newport Canvassing Authority is charged with conducting all elections for the City of Newport.

Under the direction of the State Board of Elections, and in cooperation with the Secretary of State, the Canvassing Authority is involved in all phases of the electoral process, from voter registration to tallying the votes after the polls close on election day.

City Council Meeting
