The meeting is for the purpose of canvassing the Preliminary List of Newport Voters, and to hear objections to the inclusion or omission of any person as a registered voter, and to make a Final Canvass and correction of the voter registration file for the RI US Congressional District 1 Special Primaries to be held on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. NEWPORT, R.I. (MONDAY, JULY 3, 2023) – The City of Newport’s annual Fireworks Display Over Newport Harbor is being postponed to Wednesday, July 5th.

With rain and thunderstorms possible, City officials made the decision to postpone the beloved tradition to its scheduled rain date of July 5th at 9:15 p.m.

NOTICE: 2022 Consumer Confidence Report Available

Water Division Annual Report Now Online
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2023) – The City of Newport’s Water Division has announced that the 2022 Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is now available on the City’s website at www.cityofnewport.com/ccr22.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires water systems to provide this annual report to all its consumers. The requirements for report content, format, and distribution were established by the EPA in the Consumer Confidence Rule, published in the Federal Register on August 19, 1998. The report includes information on the City’s sources of water, quality of the water, and the water distribution system.

Newport City Council Adopts FY24 Budget

New Tiered Residential Property Tax Rate Approved
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2023) – Newport City Councilors adopted a FY2024 Budget on Wednesday, June 14th.
The roughly a $110 million spending plan, which goes into effect at the start of the City’s fiscal year on July 1st, includes a number of changes to both revenue and expenditures. Read more »

Duffy Named Newport's New Police Chief

Swearing In Ceremony Set for Friday at City Hall
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2023) – Acting Police Chief Ryan Duffy, a 23-year veteran of the Newport Police Department, has been named the City’s next Police Chief.

He replaces former Police Chief Gary Silva, who retired earlier this year after more than 35 years with the City, including his last 12 as Chief. 

As Acting Chief and a member of the Department’s leadership team, Duffy has steadily risen through the ranks over his nearly 23-year career with the City. He was one of four internal candidates who interviewed for the job, and one of two finalists to take part in a public forum last week. Read more »

Newport Launching Park Ranger Program

Program Aims to Serve, Inform Park Users
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2023) – There’s a new ranger in town. The City of Newport is set to launch a new seasonal Park Ranger program this summer to provide visitors to the City’s network of public parks a helping hand and to be on the look out for potential hazards and quality of life issues. 

The program, which is the first municipal program of its kind in Rhode Island, stems from a series of community meetings related to park use and safety that began last year, culminating in a Park Safety Report drafted by the Tree & Open Space Commission and presented to the City Council. Newport City Manager to Leave Service

NEWPORT, R.I. (WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 2023) – After 37 years with the City, longtime Newport City Manager Joseph J. Nicholson, Jr. is set to step down from public service this fall.

Nicholson, whose current contract was set to run through June of 2024, informed the City Council of his intention in an email on May 4th with a plan to submit a formal letter of resignation in July.   Read more »
