Newport’s New Parking Rates, Rules Set to Begin July 1st

Changes Include New Rates, 2 Hours Free Resident Parking
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2023) – Newport residents will be getting two hours of free daily parking at all metered spaces when the City’s new parking rates go into effect on July 1st. 

In addition to allowing for two free hours at metered spots every day, the new parking program will also afford residents three free hours of parking per day at the City’s Mary Street Lot, which is located off Thames Street adjacent to Queen Anne Square.  Read more »

Residents Urged to Report Any Suspicious Letters, Phone Calls
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, MAY 9, 2023) – The Newport Water Division is warning of a potential scam involving requests to set up a fictitious water meter appointment. 

The Newport Water Division has recently received reports from customers who have been contacted by individuals posing as Water Division personnel via letter and phone calls.

Annual Earth Day Event Yields Big Recycling Results
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, May 2, 2023) – More than 422 Newport residents took advantage of the City’s Spring Recycling Day on Saturday, April 22nd. 

The event, which was held in concert with the 54th anniversary of Earth Day, provided residents with the chance to recycle hard to dispose of items, including E-Waste, textiles, rigid plastic, metal, cardboard and cooking oil. Read more »

Paid & Residential Parking Go into Effect May 1st

Parking Fees Set to Remain Steady While New Rates are Implemented
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (MONDAY, APRIL 24, 2023) – The City of Newport’s paid parking and residential sticker programs are set to begin on May 1st with no immediate change to rates or fees to start the season.  

Metered parking, which features the use of multi-space parking kiosks, will be in effect from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays. Hourly rates will remain at $1.25 per hour downtown and $2 per hour along Memorial Boulevard by Easton’s Beach.  Read more »

Newport Looking to Hire New Firefighters

Recruitment Period Open April 10th - May 19th
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, April 7, 2023) – The City of Newport is once again looking for new recruits to join the ranks of Newport’s Fire Department.

Applications, which are being accepted from April 10, 2023 until Friday, May 19, 2023, can be submitted online through FirefighterApp.com.

This is the second time in the last two years that Newport has put out the call for new firefighters. In November of 2022, the City welcomed nine Firefighters to the ranks. At the time, it was the largest batch of new recruits to join the City in recent memory and included the addition of two female firefighters. This year, the City is once again hoping to attract a diverse applicant pool, and is encouraging anyone interested in pursuing a long-lasting and rewarding career in the fire service to apply.  Read more »

Driftway Storage Applications Now Being Accepted

2023 Seasonal Dinghy Permits Now Available
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, MARCH 31ST, 2023) – Newport’s Habormaster’s Office is accepting applications for its 2023 Washington Street Driftway Storage Program. Dinghy owners are encouraged to download and submit their applications as soon as possible.

Under the City’s Harbor Ordinance, dinghies, kayaks, and other vessels less than fourteen (14) feet and/or otherwise approved by the harbormaster are allowed to be kept in designated waterfront storage areas provided they’re registered annually with the City and display current valid registration stickers.  Read more »

WORK SET TO BEGIN ON MARY STREET PARKING LOT

City to Repave, Improve ADA Access to Downtown Lot and Restrooms
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, MARCH 28th, 2023) – Newport’s spring construction season is set to get underway on Monday, April 3rd with some important upgrades to the Mary Street Parking Lot.

The project, which is part of the City’s annual Road Improvement Program, calls for resurfacing the lot and making ADA improvements around the bathroom structure as well as along Cotton Court.

SHORT-TERM RENTAL RENEWALS DUE BY MAY 31ST

Operators of STR Properties Required to Register with City
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, MARCH 28th, 2023) – Short-Term Rental registration renewals for Newport’s 2023-24 operating period are now being accepted by the City Clerk’s Office.
​
Under the City’s Zoning Ordinances, all Newport property owners who engage in rentals of 30 days or less are required to register as a Transient Guest Facility with the City no later than May 31st of each calendar year. This registration is separate, and in addition to, a requirement to register with the State of Rhode Island. Read more »

Spring Street Water Main Work To Begin March 27th

Improvements Slated for Narragansett Avenue to Perry Street
  
NEWPORT, R.I. (FRIDAY, MARCH 24th, 2023) – Please be advised that the City of Newport, Department of Utilities, Water Division will be making some critical and necessary improvements to the City’s Water System on Spring Street from Narragansett Avenue to Perry Street. 

Beginning on Monday, March 27, 2023, the Department's contractor, Boyle & Fogarty (B&F) will start construction to replace the Water Main in Spring Street with an anticipated completion date of October 31, 2023. Read more »
