2019 Consumer Confidence Report Available

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, May 6, 2020) – The City of Newport’s Water Division announces that the 2019 Consumer Confidence Report ( CCR ) is now available on the City’s website at www.cityofnewport.com/ccr19.
 
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Safe Drinking Water Act requires water systems to provide this annual report to all its consumers.  The requirements for report content, format, and distribution were established by the EPA in the Consumer Confidence Rule, published in the Federal Register on August 19, 1998. The report includes information on the City’s sources of water, quality of the water and the water distribution system. Read more »

City Releases Proposed FY2021 Budget

First Public Hearing Slated for Wednesday, May 13th

NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, May 5th 2020) – The City of Newport released its proposed FY2021 budget on Tuesday.  

The $96.4 million spending plan, which can be found on the City’s website, represents a roughly 3.5 percent reduction from the current fiscal year with the City anticipating over $3.5 million in lost revenue as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.  Read more »

COVID19 testing site opening in Newport May 6

NEWPORT, R.I. -- East Bay Family Health Services, a division of East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP), will be opening COVID19 testing by appointment only to its patients and to the general public starting on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at its Newport location.

City Delays Start of Paid Parking Season

Parking will remain free until June 1st

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 29, 2020) – It will be free to park at metered spaces and municipal parking lots throughout the City for the entire month of May.
 
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, the City announced on Tuesday that the start of the Newport’s annual Parking Meter program is being delayed until June 1, 2020. The start of the Residential Parking Program, which normally runs from May 1st through October 1st, is also being delayed until June 1st. Read more »

Visitors Asked to Wear Face Masks on the Cliff Walk

Warmer Weather Prompts Stricter Guidelines 

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, April 24, 2020) –In accordance with guidance from state health officials, the City of Newport is advising that face masks should be worn at all times while traversing the Cliff Walk until further notice.
 
As one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions, the Cliff Walk regularly draws over 1 million visitors every year. Read more »

Access to Southern Embankment of Easton’s Pond Closed

Repairs to begin following Erosion caused by Heavy Rain

NEWPORT, R.I. (Friday, April 10, 2020) – Due to necessary repairs, a portion of the unimproved walking trail along the Easton’s Pond Dam has been closed to the public.

The access ramps to the pond along with the stone dust path that was constructed from 2011-2013 remain open to the public.

COVID-19 Related Processing Delays Reflected in Utility Bills

Bank Delay resulting in Inaccurate Past Due Amounts    
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 8, 2020) – Newport Water Division customers are being advised that due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, payments mailed prior to March 31st may have been delayed due to a processing lag experienced by the City’s bank. As a result, April bills that were mailed to customers last week may inaccurately include a past due balance reflected on their account.

Three Newport Firefighters Test Positive for COVID-19

All three self-isolating at home, public safety not impacted

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 1, 2020) – Three members of the Newport Fire Department have tested positive for COVID-19.

The firefighters, who are not being identified due to patient privacy concerns, are all recovering in self-isolation at home and the Rhode Island Department of Health has been notified.

At this time, there is no impact on our public safety readiness and the Newport Fire Department has implemented contingency staffing protocols.

City Places Restrictions on Beach, Cliff Walk Access

Parking to be restricted at Easton’s Beach, Cliff Walk & Braga Park

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 1, 2020) – The City of Newport on Wednesday announced the temporary closure of several City parks and beaches due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Beginning Friday, April 3rd, parking will be prohibited at Easton’s Beach as well as adjacent access points to the Cliff Walk and Braga Park. The City is encouraging all residents to continue to be active and get out for walks or bicycle rides, but to do so close to their own homes. Read more »
