Newport, Brown University Researchers Team Up to Map Historic African-American Burying Ground

Advanced Digital Mapping Project to Focus on God’s Little Acre

NEWPORT, R.I.( Monday, Nov. 25, 2019) – God’s Little Acre, one of America’s largest and most intact burial sites for colonial era Africans and African-Americans, may soon be more easily navigable thanks to the efforts of a team from Brown University. 

The City’s Historic Cemetery Advisory Commission announced on Monday that work is underway on a project to create a high-resolution digital map of the historic site, which could serve as the foundation for future site management and exploration.

Newporters Invited to Emergency Preparedness Fair

NEWPORT, R.I. -- On Saturday, November 9, 2019 the Aquidneck Island Emergency Volunteer Alliance, in collaboration with the City of Newport, Town of Middletown, and Town of Portsmouth will be conducting its first ever Emergency Preparedness Fair at the Gaudet Middle School Gymnasium on Turner Road in Middletown from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

City to Mark Veteran's Day with Ceremony & Tower Climb

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The City of Newport will be marking the Veteran's Day holiday this year with a pair of public events on Monday, Nov. 11th.

Beginning at 11 a.m., the public is invited to join the American Legion Post 7, Newport, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., Conover-Leary Post No. 406 Newport, for the City's annual Veteran's Day Cermony outside City Hall.

Survey Seeks Input on Making Newport a Better Place to Live for All Ages

 Newport, R.I. – To make Newport a more livable City for residents as they age, a survey is asking residents age 45+ what the City is doing well and what it could do better.
 
The survey will run Oct. 25-Nov. 29 and is part of the work being done by the City, AARP-RI, and the Newport Partnership for Families to make Newport an even better place to live for its aging population. With 21 percent of the City’s population now age 60 and over, that number is projected to double by 2040. Read more »

Court House Traffic Pattern to Remain in Place for Environmental Testing

City Joins Nextdoor Community as Partner Agency

Effort Aims to Reach Residents through Neighborhood Social Networking Site
 
NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, October 9, 2019) – The City of Newport on Wednesday announced it has joined Nextdoor, the private social networking site for neighborhoods, as a Partner Agency.
 
The decision to join Nextdoor is part of an ongoing effort to advance the City’s technological and civic engagement strategy, and follows the launch of a new Smart911 Emergency Alert system last month.   Read more »

Road Closures Planned for Broadway Street Fair

(Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019) --  With the annual Broadway Street Fair due to take place this weekend, the Newport Police Department are reminding residents and visitors that Broadway will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic between Gould Street and Farewell Street, as well as all of Washington Square, from 8 a.m. until approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12th. Street Closure Planned for Concours Tour d'Elegance

Motorists are advised that a small section of Bellevue Avenue, from William Street to Bowery Street, will be closed to traffic from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

NEWPORT, R.I. (Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019) -- On Saturday, October 5, 2019 Audrain’s Newport Concours Tour d ’Elegance will take place in the City of Newport. The day begins with the Tour d’ Elegance parade of cars leaving Jamestown at approximately 7:45 a.m. and traveling over the Pell Bridge.
