The Fire Prevention Division is busy working on a broad spectrum of issues. The areas of responsibility include:
The focus of fire prevention is to oversee local compliance with the Rhode Island Fire Safety Code. This is accomplished in a variety of ways: schools, nursing homes, hotels and dormitories are inspected periodically: all commercial fire protection systems (sprinklers, suppression systems and fire alarms) are kept in a database and reviewed for compliance during any license renewal: and smoke detector inspections are performed regularly per Rhode Island State Fire Safety Code before residential properties are sold.
New construction is reviewed before any project is begun in order to assure compliance with the latest codes. Existing properties may be reviewed with reference to the newly established Rehabilitation Code. The Rehab Code can make renovation of older properties easier by providing relief from some of the new construction requirements.
