A Guide to Newport's Parks

Abbruzzi Field Abbruzzi Field

The northern home of the Newport Little League, the park includes a baseball field, T-ball field, concession stand and restrooms.

Ann Street Pier Ann Street Pier & Maritime Center

Located adjacent to the Maritime Center with its services for transient boaters, it is a popular location for visiting boaters.

Amenities: Beach, Dock, Information, Laundry, Restroom, Showers


Aquidneck Park Aquidneck Park

The grounds of the former Edward King estate make up Aquidneck Park and acts as a campus for the Senior Center, Public Library and Martin Recreation Center. The park includes lighted tennis courts, a playground and a large lawn for play, but is also popular for more passive activities such as sunbathing or reading a book.

Baileys Beach Baileys Beach

Located at the southern end of the Cliff Walk, is the public portion of Bailey’s Beach, known by locals as Rejects Beach. The beach has limited parking and amenities but is much loved for its natural scenery.

Ballard Park Ballard Park

This 13 acre park was created in 1990, donated to the City by Carol Ballard. Thanks to the stewardship of the Friends of Ballard Park, this former quarry site is home to many public events, including, movies, concerts and winter illuminated garden. The park is a popular place for hikes and dog walking.

Battery Park Battery Park

Located in the Point District Neighborhood, Battery Park was created from “Fort Greene,” a former military battery from the War of 1812. A small, waterfront park, overlooking the Newport Bridge the park is perfect for picnics, sunset strolls and taking in views of the harbor.

Braga Park Braga Park

Donated in memory of a fallen Vietnam Soldier, Braga Park includes basketball courts, a playground, a picnic area, a soccer field, a softball field, and is the access point for the Easton’s Pond rim trail.

Brenton Point Brenton Point

Brenton Point State Park offers its visitors a spectacular view on the East Coast. The park is located at the point of land where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic, midway along Ocean Drive. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, hiking, fishing, and taking in the majestic views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cardines Field Cardines Field

This historic wooden stadium located in the heart of downtown Newport is home to multiple leagues including the popular collegiate league’s Newport Gulls. With references dating back as far as 1893, Cardines Field is considered one of the oldest ball parks in the country.

Cliff Walk Cliff Walk

The world famous 3.5 mile coastal trail is the most visited tourist location in Rhode Island. Designated as a National Recreation Trail it offers unmatched scenic beauty and views of the gilded age mansions that line the walk.

Coddington Cemetery Coddington Cemetery

Coddington burial ground is the oldest cemetery in Newport and includes more Colonial Governors than any other cemetery in the state, including one of Newport’s founders William Coddington.

Coggeshall Park Coggeshall Park

The grounds of the former Coggeshall School is our newest park which includes a playground and a popular neighborhood play field.

Common Burial Ground Common Burial Ground

Established in 1640 this historic cemetery is thought to include the largest number of colonial era headstones in a single cemetery. The section known as “God’s Little Acre” has been recognized as having the oldest and largest surviving collection of markers of enslaved and free Africans.

Easton’s Beach Easton’s Beach

Easton’s Beach, located on Memorial Boulevard at the start of the Cliff Walk, is a 3/4 mile long surf beach with a board walk, historic carousel, playground, store, and a concession stand famous for its twin lobster rolls. The ballroom with views of Easton’s Bay and Easton’s Pond is a popular wedding venue. Located on the first floor is Save the Bay’s exploration center aquarium.

Edward Street Playground Edward Street Playground & MLK Park

Located adjacent to the MLK Center is a playground, chess tables, a basketball court and a paved free play area.

Elm Street Pier and Boat Ramp Elm Street Pier and Boat Ramp

A popular downtown location for boat launching and a favorite neighborhood swimming spot.

Fort Adams Fort Adams

Rhode Island state park located at the mouth of Newport Harbor, offering panoramic views of the harbor and Narragansett Bay.

Freebody Park Freebody Park

This WPA era stadium was the original home of the Newport Folk Festival, is a multi use recreational facility with softball fields, the Toppa Football Field, and a playground.

This is a multi use park with a playground, softball field, tennis courts and very soon the City’s first pickle ball courts

King Park King Park

Located at the southern end of the Newport Harbor Walk, this is one of our most picturesque parks, perfect for baseball, swimming, summer concert, weddings and sunset walks on the Harbor Walk. Restrooms open seasonally.

Kingston Street Playground Kingston Street Playground

This is a small neighborhood playground with swings, slides, and a tire swing.

Martin Recreation Center Martin Recreation Center

This center houses the Recreation Division offices, a community room and a large gymnasium popular for a wide array of sports and activities.

Amenities: Basketball, Volleyball


Miantonomi Park Miantonomi Park

Established as a WW1 memorial park, this park includes Miantonomi Hill, the highest point in Newport. The Hill, once the seat of power for the Narragansett Indians, has housed colonial beacons, revolutionary war fortifications, and finally, a 1929 memorial tower designed by Meade, McKim and White. With the assistance of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, Sunset Hill has been added to the park with its revolutionary war earthen redoubt. The park is popular for birding, dog walking, and large community cookouts.

Morton Park Morton Park

This historic park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, was donated to the City by Levi Morton, a future Vice President of the United States, who drove one of the first rivets into the Statue of Liberty’s big toe as the Ambassador to France. This picturesque park includes a volley ball court, large picnic area and a popular playground.

Murphy Field Murphy Field

Located near Rogers High School, Murphy Field is heavily used for high school sports including baseball, softball, football, tennis and basketball. The park also includes a WPA era stone slide and a childrens playground.

Newport Dog Park Newport Dog Park

The only site approved in the City for off-leash dogs is located on J.T. Connell Highway. It includes a separate enclosure for dogs under 25 lbs.

North Burial Ground North Burial Ground

Perrotti Park Perrotti Park

Perrotti Park with its public docks and Harbor Center, is the center for Maritime transportation in downtown Newport. The Harbor Center offers public restrooms and information on the harbor.

Pop Flack Courts Pop Flack Courts

Located in Aquidneck Park near the Tennis Hall of Fame,these four courts have recently been upgraded with state-of-the-art LED tennis lights.

Queen Anne Square Queen Anne Square

This public common located below Trinity Church was established by Doris Duke. A full restoration of the park was completed in 2013 by the Newport Restoration Foundation. The new park was designed by Maya Lin, known best for the Washington Vietnam War Memorial.

Rogers High School Rogers High School

Athletic facilities include the City’s largest tennis complex, a walking track, and a soccer field. Maintained by the Public Services Department, these facilities are open for public use during non-school hours.

Storer Park Storer Park

This waterfront park located adjacent to the Goat Island Causeway, is popular for all ages, with basketball courts, fishing, a small beach and a lawn for picnicking.

Third Street Playground Third Street Playground

A small playground with swings, picnic tables and a high net climber ideal for older children.

Amenities: Playground


Touro Park Touro Park

Historic Touro Park houses the Old Stone Mill, considered one of the oldest structures in the United States. The origins of the arched stone structure described by Governor Benedict Arnold in his will as “my Old Stone Mill” has been attributed to Vikings, Chinese Explorers, and more.

VanZandt Pier Van Zandt Pier

Located at the western end of VanZandt Avenue, this pier is popular for fishing and swimming.
