NEWPORT, R.I. (TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2023) – Acting Police Chief Ryan Duffy, a 23-year veteran of the Newport Police Department, has been named the City’s next Police Chief.
He replaces former Police Chief Gary Silva, who retired earlier this year after more than 35 years with the City, including his last 12 as Chief.
As Acting Chief and a member of the Department’s leadership team, Duffy has steadily risen through the ranks over his nearly 23-year career with the City. He was one of four internal candidates who interviewed for the job, and one of two finalists to take part in a public forum last week.

Newport Launching Park Ranger Program
Program Aims to Serve, Inform Park Users
NEWPORT, R.I. (THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2023) – There’s a new ranger in town. The City of Newport is set to launch a new seasonal Park Ranger program this summer to provide visitors to the City’s network of public parks a helping hand and to be on the look out for potential hazards and quality of life issues.
The program, which is the first municipal program of its kind in Rhode Island, stems from a series of community meetings related to park use and safety that began last year, culminating in a Park Safety Report drafted by the Tree & Open Space Commission and presented to the City Council.
